Hosea 13:1-14

New International Version

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;^(A)
    he was exalted^(B) in Israel.
    But he became guilty of Baal worship^(C) and died.
²Now they sin more and more;
    they make^(D) idols for themselves from their silver,^(E)
cleverly fashioned images,
    all of them the work of craftsmen.^(F)
It is said of these people,
    “They offer human sacrifices!
    They kiss^[a]^(G) calf-idols!^(H)”
³Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
    like the early dew that disappears,^(I)
    like chaff^(J) swirling from a threshing floor,^(K)
    like smoke^(L) escaping through a window.

⁴“But I have been the Lord your God
    ever since you came out of Egypt.^(M)
You shall acknowledge^(N) no God but me,^(O)
    no Savior^(P) except me.
⁵I cared for you in the wilderness,^(Q)
    in the land of burning heat.
⁶When I fed them, they were satisfied;
    when they were satisfied, they became proud;^(R)
    then they forgot^(S) me.^(T)
⁷So I will be like a lion^(U) to them,
    like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
⁸Like a bear robbed of her cubs,^(V)
    I will attack them and rip them open;
like a lion^(W) I will devour them—
    a wild animal will tear them apart.^(X)

⁹“You are destroyed, Israel,
    because you are against me,^(Y) against your helper.^(Z)
¹⁰Where is your king,^(AA) that he may save you?
    Where are your rulers in all your towns,
of whom you said,
    ‘Give me a king and princes’?^(AB)
¹¹So in my anger I gave you a king,^(AC)
    and in my wrath I took him away.^(AD)
¹²The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
    his sins are kept on record.^(AE)
¹³Pains as of a woman in childbirth^(AF) come to him,
    but he is a child without wisdom;
when the time^(AG) arrives,
    he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb.^(AH)

¹⁴“I will deliver this people from the power of the grave;^(AI)
I will redeem them from death.^(AJ)
Where, O death, are your plagues?
Where, O grave, is your destruction?^(AK)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.^(A) You believe^(B) in God^[a];^(C) believe also in me. ²My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there^(D) to prepare a place for you? ³And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back^(E) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.^(F) ⁴You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

⁵Thomas^(G) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

⁶Jesus answered, “I am^(H) the way^(I) and the truth^(J) and the life.^(K) No one comes to the Father except through me.^(L) ⁷If you really know me, you will know^[b] my Father as well.^(M) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

⁸Philip^(N) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

⁹Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.^(O) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?^(P) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.^(Q) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. ¹¹Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.^(R) ¹²Very truly I tell you, whoever believes^(S) in me will do the works I have been doing,^(T) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. ¹³And I will do whatever you ask^(U) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Repentance to Bring Blessing

14 ^[a]Return,^(A) Israel, to the Lord your God.
    Your sins^(B) have been your downfall!^(C)
²Take words with you
    and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
    “Forgive^(D) all our sins
and receive us graciously,^(E)
    that we may offer the fruit of our lips.^[b]^(F)
³Assyria cannot save us;^(G)
    we will not mount warhorses.^(H)
We will never again say ‘Our gods’^(I)
    to what our own hands have made,^(J)
    for in you the fatherless^(K) find compassion.”

⁴“I will heal^(L) their waywardness^(M)
    and love them freely,^(N)
    for my anger has turned away^(O) from them.
⁵I will be like the dew^(P) to Israel;
    he will blossom like a lily.^(Q)
Like a cedar of Lebanon^(R)
    he will send down his roots;^(S)
⁶    his young shoots will grow.
His splendor will be like an olive tree,^(T)
    his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.^(U)
⁷People will dwell again in his shade;^(V)
    they will flourish like the grain,
they will blossom^(W) like the vine—
    Israel’s fame will be like the wine^(X) of Lebanon.^(Y)
⁸Ephraim, what more have I^[c] to do with idols?^(Z)
    I will answer him and care for him.
I am like a flourishing juniper;^(AA)
    your fruitfulness comes from me.”

⁹Who is wise?^(AB) Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.^(AC)
The ways of the Lord are right;^(AD)
    the righteous walk^(AE) in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵“If you love me, keep my commands.^(A) ¹⁶And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate^(B) to help you and be with you forever— ¹⁷the Spirit of truth.^(C) The world cannot accept him,^(D) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be^[a] in you. ¹⁸I will not leave you as orphans;^(E) I will come to you.^(F) ¹⁹Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.^(G) Because I live, you also will live.^(H) ²⁰On that day^(I) you will realize that I am in my Father,^(J) and you are in me, and I am in you.^(K) ²¹Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.^(L) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,^(M) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

²²Then Judas^(N) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”^(O)

²³Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.^(P) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.^(Q) ²⁴Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.^(R)

²⁵“All this I have spoken while still with you. ²⁶But the Advocate,^(S) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,^(T) will teach you all things^(U) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.^(V) ²⁷Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.^(W) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled^(X) and do not be afraid.

²⁸“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’^(Y) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,^(Z) for the Father is greater than I.^(AA) ²⁹I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.^(AB) ³⁰I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world^(AC) is coming. He has no hold over me, ³¹but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.^(AD)
